This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module covers basic concepts in statistics and probability which have applications in Business and Economics.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
(a) process data to produce histograms etc and determine means, medians and standard deviation for discrete, continuous, grouped, ungrouped data;
(b) calculate probabilities, in particular in connection with the binomial distribution;
(c) use the standard normal curve (i) to approximate to binomial probabilities and (ii) to obtain confidence intervals.
- Data summary: Histograms
- Stem-and-leaf diagrams
- Box plots
- Measures of location
- Measures of dispersion
- Probability: Sample space
- Exclusive and complementary events
- Conditional probability
- Independent events
- Discrete random variables: Probability function and cumulative distribution function
- Expectation and variance
- Binomial and Poisson distributions
- Normal distribution: Reduction to standard form
- Use of tables.
